get a crappy laptop ;)

depends on your clientelle look at frys, half the laptops there have damage
to the keyboards etc (especially the ibooks i've noticed) and they aren't out
all that long.

i have the standard wire lock on mine, if i'm at the airport or starbucks etc, but
the main detterent beyond the visual is if someone runs off with it, it rips a large
hole in the laptop, not the greatest.

setting bios passwords etc on newer laptops is a good detterent if you can
let people know its there, thinkpads have encrypted drives. I recently bought
a vaio x505 and the distributor had lent it for a photoshoot, some muppet put
a system password on it, and it had to go back to japan for replacement of the
security chip, which they'll only do on proof of ownership.the newer chips
are a lot more secure.

so unfortunately most of the laptop deterrents are based on the knowledge it
can't be used after being stolen, however thats rarely a deterrent, it'll end up
in a pawn shop or ebay anyway, and having signs all over it saying how its
protected isn't all that consumer friendly.

you'd be better off with a kiosk, unless you have an upscale client pool.

insurance seems the best bet for most laptop users.

Is anyone aware of a product that will protect a laptop from theft if placed
in a hotel lobby for guest access? My main concern here is theft or
vandalism.
