I can't provide specific help with whatever boot loader you are using, but on FreeBSD it is essential to increase kern.cam.boot_delay to something greater than 5s in order for the device to be probed properly and for the bus to settle. Changing this value for booting from USB sticks on the net6501 made the difference between booting and brick. - M
