I appreciate all the answers on the topic of boot problems with 8gb Sandisk
Cruzer Fit. You have given me food for thought. A couple of points:

1. net6501 correctly identifies both sizes of Cruzer Fits on the bios
screen as device 80, and correctly reports the size. With 8gb, quits with
the message "1 seconds to automatic boot", with 16 gb proceeds to Syslinux
boot and Linux.

2. I do have multiple 8 gb thumb drives, can't remember if I tried more
than one (think I did), will do that next. Will also try booting on another
machine.

3. I have gotten the 8gb drives to boot other OS's on other machines (e.g.
FreeDOS).

>From various reports I gather both that the 8gb Cruzer Fits should (often
do) work, but also that the net6501 may be a bit finicky about the boot
drive. I also realize most folks here run BSD, so you don't have the exact
same situation as me.

I did get the 16gb drives first, maybe I did something different preparing
the 8gb. I'll try again going step by step. Roughly:

1. Format usb drive for FAT32
2. Run syslinux on a linux box targeting the usb drive
3. copy LEAF distribution files, being careful not to disturb ldlinux.sys
created by syslinux
4. try to boot

For what it's worth, LEAF is a terrific little distribution suitable for
routers and other embedded OS purposes. LEAF only uses the USB drive to
boot, after that uses a RAM drive. Probably similar to some small BSD
distributions some of you use.

Thanks!
