Manual says: "Implicit textures do not have explicit UV coordinates that you can edit in the texture editor. Instead, the projection is defined by a mathematical formula."
Rendermapping need UVs. Therefore you can't rendermap implicit projections. You can move UVs in the TE and see it in the viewport but when rendered, mental ray projects the texture regardless of the manual UV tweaking. Basically it's a mental ray extra-feature.
