Hi Chris,
- Create a mantra node in /out
- switch in the rendering tab the rendering engine to Physically Based
Rendering.
- start using the Disney Principal Shader in /shop
or use arnold instead ;-)

Thanks Jordi,
A quick couple of questions about your shading introduction.
On page 152 you say you add the lambert shader to the BSDF port as
you're using the PBR engine.
OK So this is making a few assumptions.
PBR Engine? How do I switch to that? Why that one? How would I know to
connect the BSDF port and not the Colour port?
Thanks for your help, it's much appreciated.

Because you don’t want to turn it on, these “abbreviations” happen
to be also the name of the variables which happen to be Renderman
friendly so as you can imagine there is a lot of history underneath.
Moreover, if you go to the shader you may be writing and inspect
the code generated these are the variables used and makes it more
readable.
:-)
But I get why would you like to have a shorter mechanism to
inspect it… I will log a request to SideFX.

OK will take a look.
Quick question though, how do I expand the names on material
shader ports? Currently they're abbreviated.

And there is stopping point for me :(
Hope that they can close that gap soon and get it
close to SI level

As posted, Peter Quint has a lot of really
great videos. The only drawback is that houdini
has changed a good bit since H12 so there are
many different/better approaches to some
methods, still good to watch though.
I can recommend a few other sources:

Houdini is hands down the best software I've
used since I stopped using Soft 2.5 years ago.
I would 100% switch if it was character
animation/keyframe friendly in any way. They
are making progress in that department.
