I'd use a 16LF88 powered from 3.3V instead of the 16F627 that he uses, the 
I2C level conversion won't then be required. The Powertip LCDs will operate 
at 3.3V, although a negative contrast input would be required. This could be 
derived with a diode charge pump driven from a spare output on the 16LF88. 
I've used the standard 16F88 at 2.85V, way outside the spec, but it operated 
reliably, until I could get some of the LF ones. I had to buy them direct 
from Microchip, they aren't available in the UK in small quantities.
