As Carlisle drew nearer, the hull changed pattern, and then a long,
tentacle-like appendage morphed out of the center of it.  The bulb-like end
was tilted towards Carlisle, as if it were a head or a large eye.  It did
nothing, except it seemed to be either looking or waiting expectantly.

He looked at it curiously. After a good, yet odd, moment's gander he said, "Hello???"

The bulb reacted, expanding into a square box that looked like a small monitor. The surface glimmered into a flat sheen, and letters in Standard appeared. [Identification required for further access]


It waited.
