Joanna's navy blue eyes looked over the CinC. She gained a new level of
respect for him. It was clear that he cared for David, not just as one of
his officer's but as a friend. it was good to see a CO who was willing to
allow that. "With a team like that supporting him, I don't think David will
be out of the field for very long," she said with a smile.
"That is reassuring to hear, Counselor. Please let me know if I can be of
further help in his recovery. I would like to help where I can."
"I am sure that what your are doing will be adequate. I am concerned about
the VanDerLoo situation. From what I have heard, Captain Boulay believes
that he purposefully sent him into a death zone. If the system doesn't
punish VanDerLoo for what has happened, than I am worried that Captain
Boulay may take justice into his own hands."
"That is why I called for you. Right now all I have is his report, which
amounts to circumstancial evidence. I wanted to send him back to the area
with a full investigative team to properly investigate and document what's
been happening out there. Having him out there would only help the
investigation, but, as you said, he is not able to go. So, Van Der Loo will
wait until I have a team capable of the task. While I so sympathize with
him, if he takes any action on his own, I will have no choice to put him
away."
Joanna was surprised at Lasiter's plans. One would not normally have a
victem of rape or other sort of violent crime be a participant in the
investigation of the crime. They have an important role to play in the
investigation, but being one of the investigators was not one of hem.
Besides, from what she understood, David was not the only victim in this
instance. She was not sure how to broach the subject with him.
"Sir, permission to speak freely."
"Of course, Counselor..."
