>Sharez understood the argument being presented. He had had his own
>problems with Renaud's predecessor. "Do you find your split duties to be
>too much to deal with in relation to addressing enough time and energy to
>these improvements?"

>"Not at all. I have wonderful support staffs in both areas to help me
>address any situation that arises. I can also leave Spacedock with short
>notice to my staff there if I am needed on-site."

>Ambassador Anderson, the Terran representative, did something that was
>uncharacteristic. He took an interest....

>"My appologies to the Committee Chair for interjecting, but I take issue
>with your answer Admiral Renaud. The kinds of changes to the very
>structure of R&D will require you to travel more than occassionally all
>over Federation territory. How can you run Spacedock effectively while
>traveling so much? Keep in mind, sir, that Spacedock is not just another
>Starfleet installation. It serves as the home port of the fleet, and the
>gateway to Earth to many of the travellers who come here. The events of
>late are still fresh in our minds, Admiral. The murder of Venasian Chief
>Investigator Telax, the attack at the funeral of Admiral Lasiter, the
>bombing on Spacedock, and the attacks by the Brotherhood are all events
>that demand the attention of the station commander, not some proxy. I
>question the wisdom of your dual duties, considering these events."

>"First recent events are fresh in my mind as well and I can assure you each
>is taken seriously. My tenure in Starfleet shows I have juggled many duties
>simultaneously in the past. I am sure Admiral Lasiter considered the needs
>of this before asking me to take the position. Our new Fleet Security
>Chief-Admiral Smallwood, Spacedock Security Chief Commander K'Tael, and
>others are more then adept at handling any situations in my absence. We
also
>have JAG Chief Captain David Boulay who can step in on any situation that
is
>needed as he occassionally handles Special Assignments for the C-in-C."

>"Your response is very interesting, Admiral.", the Rigelian answered. "I
was not aware that JAG had >been approved for field commands. The JAG has
always been a professional officer, not a line >officer. As you are well
aware of, only line officers may be assigned field commands such as >command
of a starbase."

>The Terran did not leave an openning for answer, "Admiral Renaud, if the
Chief of Fleet Security and >your own Chief of Station Security could not
prevent these incidents on the station why should we >continue to put our
faith in them? If they can handle the situation while you are gone, are you
then not >needed at all?"

"In response to your previous statement, Captain Boulay is the JAG Chief but
he is an extremely talented and skilled individual. I never stated he was
being given field commands, but he can consult on various situations." He
continued not allowing the Rigelian a response in kind, "Both the Fleet
Security Chief and Station Security are currently heading full
investigations not only to solve these situations but prevent them in the
future as well. In terms of whether I am needed sir that is not my decision.
I work for Starfleet and I work for Admiral Samuel Lasiter. I am assigned my
duties, and as my track record will show, I perform them to the utmost of my
abilities. I am very proud of Spacedock and her crew and position within
Starfleet. She will continue to be our crown jewel." He was not stuck
up-just stating a fact.
