Watson decided it was time to push the envelope.  "I was talking with Chair
Ra'aj on the way hear, and we were having a bit of a disagreement about
something.  Is it true that you are one of those folks who still likes to
use ink and paper when writing correspondence."  Watson could only hope that
the true
question was evident.

A silence fell over the table as the Council representatives new what the
true question was.  Fortunately, Gul Legrath seemed oblivious.

Melora started to open her mouth for a moment as if she was about to say
something, but Rilg, who was seated next to her, grabbed her hand very
uncharacteristically and sneered at her.  His pointed Ferengi teeth were the
only message she got, and she felt a surprising amount of fear from the
small man.

Golan's eyes darted around the table in anxiety before a smile spread across
his lips.  It was clear that he got the message.  "I have always found the
use of pen and paper to be comforting in our time when everyone  seems to
use dicto programs to write their correspondence.  In some ways,  they are
more reliable since they can express the real feelings and character of the
writer."

<Yes!> Valtris thought to herself.  They had it.  He had at least confirmed
that the letter Watson had received was from him.  Now, they just had to
figure a way to get him off planet without starting a war.  Once he was out
of Cardassian space, he could be given amnesty by one of the powers present.

"I believe that you even once told me that you used traditional Cardassian ink and paper when writing your own correspondence," added T'Kresh.

Rilg too smiled.  They had their breakthrough.  "Gul Legrath, I am sure you government would be open to the professor taking a short vacation considering everything he has been up to recently."

The Gul's eyes narrowed as he focused on the little worm.  It was going to be difficult to keep them off this.  "As I assured you before, the good professor is not a prisoner on Cardassia Prime.  We were only looking after his health and helping him to settle in after his retirement."

(folks?)
