"They started about six months ago. At first, they were just rumors ... at
least, that is what we thought they were. They always seemed to involve
the other side, but over time, it was becoming clear that these incidents
included our side, too."
"Can you gives us some examples of some specific atrocities committed by the
defence forces, the rebels and Starfleet personnel for us and give us an
estimate of the numbers involved," asked the Counselor.
"For the most part, it seems that the various factions are capturing people
and torture is becoming common. I would say that there about 300 such
incidents every quarter."
If David had had a drink in his mouth, he would've spewed it out at this
response. He mouthed it before looking at Jackson for a response....
Jared saw David's reaction and had to admit that he had to hold in the same
shock. That seemed like a large number. "How can that be happening and get
so little response from the outside world?"
Stark turned to face the Admiral. "Most of these incidents fall under a
category that identifies them as prisoners of war so they are not flagged by
anyone as being more worrisome. And it has been my experience that people
see what they ready to see."
Joanna could sense how uncomforable Stark was about talking about these
incidents. It was probably not tied to the fact that he was involved, but
rather at his distaste for what had happened. These were horrible
incidents, but his explanation for how they had slipped through the cracks
made sense. "Do you think the defense forces are doing this in the hopes of
framing the rebels to make them look like they are monsters?"
