Big difference between spam and door-knocking...  The door-to-door
solicitation can be (and has been) effectively stopped.  In *my*
community, a solicitor knocking on my door will be arrested for
criminal trespass.  The city actually enforces that ordinance, so the
door-to-door sales types *all* respect it.

There are other places in the US with even stronger ordinances (some
cities in Colorado, for instance).
