I have to disagree - I get less spam now than I've ever received since
96 or so, thanks to SpamAssassin (about the only thing SA needs is an
automatic update system). There has also been some progress on the ISP
front: most of the messages in my spamtrap came from Chinese and Korean
servers - a few years ago it was predominantly US/European. I think the
current approach of going after the providers will work, albeit with a
non-trivial amount of effort.

The missing link as far as I can tell is simply mail client support. We
really need trivial mechanisms for reporting spam and managing one's
antispam system(s). I can think of a couple examples that look very
promising:

- Deersoft integrates SpamAssassin into Outlook
- Apple's Mail filter also appears to be surprisingly effective, with
the caveat that my copy doesn't get much use thanks to SpamAssassin.

Cloudmark's system looks very interesting but I haven't tested it
personally.
