I think going forward, it would have to be enhancements and not replacements to the system etc...

We've changed many parts of Spectra (tuning up the system) with core replacement of Container/SiteModel/PLP/Security/Metadata and tuned nearly 70-80% of the system (there are many tuning possibilities :-), but the base system is still the same idea. It's a great and free tool and the old problem of mac or linux users can't edit html content went away. The cleaning of content can then be done in conjunction with HTML Tidy and some regEx on the serverside to produce clean xhtml.
