Absolutely!  And Spectra has many things in its favour, not least:
  - there is an established client base already using the product
  - many developers understand the product
  - there is good documentation (certainly compared with most open 
source projects)
  - it actually works, though it's *not* a solution out of the box

Don't get me wrong, I've been a Spectra fanatic since the earliest beta 
and have fought the good fight for years.  Oh, and there may be the odd 
bit of fight left in me yet :)

But a labour of love is a point solution -- something a small group of 
developers (often one) can lavish attention on and make useful.  An 
application framework is very much more difficult -- not least because 
adding functionality to a system needs to allow for so many variations 
of its implementation.

Spectra is going to be difficult to manage because beyond the COAPI it 
doesn't really offer a clear road-map for development.  How many of us 
on this list are running independent site layout models, custom 
reporting, unique workflow, bastardised container management and so on.

The stark reality is open source is a grave yard for best intentions.
