This if() is required. We mustn't do the ioctl for async.
Also you must remove the sync option from ppp options
probably in /etc/ppp/peers/adsl and you will need to
modprobe ppp_async
alias tty-ldisc-3 ppp_async
in /etc/modules.conf did the trick for me.

p.s. I haven't tested this switchable version yet but I will tonight/tomorrow
but the original patch worked correctly
p.p.s. Although I haven't tried it yet I think that the async version could
be used on a moduleless kernel (for those of us who think it is an extra
security issue on a firewall to have loadable modules) n_hdlc can't
(couldn't?) be built into the kernel but must be a module.
