Are you sure? The usual reason for this kind of thing is the following: pppd has opened a connection. For some reason (USB error or pulling it out) the modem is disconnected. However, pppd continues to hold the connection open. Any new attempts to connect are interpreted as attempts to connect via the disconnected device and are rejected (error code: ENODEV). Killing the old pppd usually solves it. You can check whether it is something like this by looking in /proc/net/atm. What files are in there and what do they contain? Thanks, D.
