this kind of thing could be due to a bad connection, a too long cable, or a cable passing close to a source of electromagnetic interference (power supply etc). So try shifting your cables about, and plugging into a different port (USB ports in the back of the computer are usually better than those in the front). As for whether pppd can be relaunched, I don't think you replied to my question: when pppd fails to reconnect, what is in /proc/net/atm/? (files and file contents). Ciao, Duncan.
