To my knowledge, because of LCP, pppd always die after usb trouble when the
timeout occure and the connection was up.
The only case when I saw pppd hang forever is when the connection start and fail
before the connection was up. Even if LCP timeout occure, pppd continue to live.

This behavior was seen with every pppoa client I have tested (pppoa:eagle-usb,
pppoa3:speedtouch usb and pppoatm.so plugin)
