I have to disagree. It seems to be an obvious statement that safety
should take priority over everything else.  There are correct and
incorrect situations for use of a ladder and only those who can't tell
the difference should leave the ladder at home.  I have seen many
railfans shooting video with a leg of their tripod within a foot or two
from the edge of the ties !! Does that mean that we should all leave
tripods at home ?? 
Speaking of important things to bring along...how about a small folding
saw.
