In a totally idealistic sense you are correct. In a practical sense,
depending on the quality of the lens, and the way it is supported your
advice is misleading. I rely on the lens testing features in Modern
Photography in selecting lenses and above all I use a tripod and the
fastest shutter speed my particular combination of lens and film will
support. Your instructors notwithstanding, I have got a considerable
archive of good sharp 35mm transperencies, many of them published, from my
two long zooms, the Tokina and an 80 - 200 AF F2.8 Nikor.
