In a practical sense, depending on the quality of the lens, and the way it is supported your advice is misleading. I rely on the lens testing features in Modern Photography in selecting lenses and above all I use a tripod and the fastest shutter speed my particular combination of lens and film will support. Your instructors notwithstanding, I have got a considerable archive of good sharp 35mm transperencies, many of them published, from my two long zooms, the Tokina and an 80 - 200 AF F2.8 Nikor.
