First, you must realize that you cannot correct for loss of sharpness in
Photoshop. When you "sharpen" images in Photoshop, you are adjusting
contrast in adjacent pixels, giving the perception of increased sharpness,
while actually degrading the overall image. There is no real way to
sharpen images. This is kind of besides the point though. Although the
digitial world is interesting, and has its place, my comments were not
made with digital imaging in mind.

>However the real test of how good is your zoom lens is when you blow it up
on actual photographic paper,
>(i.e. 8x10 or 11x14 for 35mm). Okay, how many of you have blown up your
>slides and negatives to see if your zoom lens is sharp?

I have 4 16x20 full frame prints in my office, that considering the 16x20
size is larger than recommended for 35 mm film and that they are third
generation (35 mm film, 4x5 internegative, and 16x20 print), their
sharpness is excellent. (to make a long story short, I use internegs
instead of Cibachromes, because I have maintained ties with my former
employer, and benefit from very low costs as a result, and they cannot make
Cibachormes, er, IlfoChromes). Two of these shots were taken with a 2x
teleconverter as well, with very good results. Before I became a light
rail consultant, I worked at a custom processing shop and studio for nearly
10 years. I have some decent experience, and I am certain what I have is
proof in the pudding.

This is not to say that every image I shoot is razor sharp, it is not. Some
of my favorite images are not perfectly sharp. It is also not to say that
what I have experienced with my lenses is reflective of everyone else. It
is not. But I can say with a great deal of certainty, and obviously with
support from many individuals, is that the quality and sharpness of today's
zoom lenses from the major manufacturers is excellent.
