Poor Sam, we probably ought to get off his case about un-sharp zoom lenses.
 Please don't get me wrong, I can not agree with his assessment (or his
instructors').  Anything I would have to offer would only mirror comments
made by Dave Busse, Rick Newton, Bob Richardson, and others.

My point is that Sam is not going to get a convert on this list, and even
perhaps frighten away a "newbie" getting into the hobby.  If Sam, or
anybody else, wants to invest in and lug around many pounds of expensive
fixed-focal length lenses, it is his prerogative.  That money could better
be spent on high quality fast zooms.  Buy the zoom lenses first, THEN go
buy the nice fixed lenses that you have determined that you will use most
often.

Just my 2-cents worth.
