Has anyone ever tried filters when using strobe as fill-flash? I was riding the Grand Canyon FPA4s earlier this month, shooting a lot of in-cab shots of the crew. A lot of photojournalists I know insist on warming their flash with a piece of #85 filter material over the flash. I did this on the Grand Canyon and the warming effect was wonderful...not unnaturally warm, but just warm enough to make the skin tones better in the bleak locomotive interior against the cold outside light (and snow & pine trees outside). The 85 filter will stay velcro-ed on my flash whenever I'm doing people photography. Have also seen guys use light green filters when shooting under mostly-flourescent lighting, but I have no experience with that. I think some of the newer flashes have drop-in fliters. A little velcro and a small piece of #85 gel filter did the trick just fine... --David R.
