The way we interpret this requirement is exterior portions of the
building. However its possible to see where jurisdictions would require
interior portions as well solely based on the wording of the code.
Unfortunately, the IFC code summary book (handbook) doesn't provide any
more insight. With that said, we have used "horizontal" standpipes and
wall hydrants at strategic locations to meet the 150-ft requirement.

Subject: IFC 503.1.1 Fire Apparatus Access

503.1.1 "The fire apparatus access road shall comply with the
requirements of this section and shall extend to within 150 feet of all
portions of the facility and..."

We have a local AHJ that is requiring a Class I standpipe when all
"interior" portions of a facility are not within 150 ft.

A few questions.

Does the access requirement of 150 ft to "all portions of the facility"
refer to exterior or interior?

Is anything in writing like an official/unofficial interpretation?

What do AHJ's do when the access dimension cannot be accomplished?

P.S. Building in question is S1 300 ft. x 1025 ft.
