I believe this is the reason you can lookup in wally world and see
branchlines every so often that have short armovers w/ uprights. I was
curious until your question and now I'm going to look to verify. I wonder if
you aren't working on the same company's stores that we are All of our
hanger details are general for all trades but specific at the same time. Our
S-T is in TN and I believe most GC don't enforce the whole branhline hanger
due to factoring in common sense vs. type.

Subject: Hanging branch lines from panel points

Thank you Ed and Bobby for your feedback.

The problem is that the Mechanical Engineer used a generic spec and
details for all trades. His response was that the contract drawings show
this because the joist manufacture will void the warranty if we hang further
than 6" from the panel points. We have approved plans from the Architect
and Engineers showing the branch lines hung from the top cord and not the
panel points of the top cord so we will ask for a change order. We also
have a phone conversation report showing that the Structural Engineer had no
issue with our branch line hanger detail.

The lesson for us is to exclude this in our bids.

Actually, right now I'm designing a very similar store and in the specs
and details it says the same thing in reference to all piping. We have
installed many and they have never enforced the branch line piping. However
I have noticed in some stores Like Wally world the branchlines are run at
those locations and where the head spacing did not work out they had short
armovers for those particular uprights. Bad thing is I'm having a time
just getting bottom chord sizing for bar joist and girders, I can only
imagine trying to get webbing layouts. I'm interested to know how it turns
out.
  Good
luck.
