You DO have to protect it, see 13:8.14.22 (02 ed). Although there is
no fuel load, we are protecting the steel from the heat of an
adjacent fire. With that in mind, let's consider a store with the
rear storage open to the area above the ceiling over the mercantile
area. Do you think heads 300 ft away from the rear will be needed to
protect against the heat? As such, you'd think our proposal to only
require a row or two within that area would be a slam dunk. It was
indeed slammed and dunked as part of the rejection.
On single side exposure like the store, the easy thing is to put up a
layer of sheet rock so it's a non-combustible concealed space. The
separation does not require a rating but just a physical barrier
capable of delaying heat just like 13:11.1.2 (lets say it's small
enough to be Accessory Use or meets the mixed occupancy requirements
to avoid the code separation discussion).
When you can't separate the area, as already said the design basis
after the 15 ft overlap is based upon the fuel load below the
system. As for the issue of using QR after the 15 ft overlap,
13:8.3.3.2 says ALL heads in the same compartment must be QR. HAving
said that, though, we do allow ESFR in the same compartment with
standard response sprinklers as long as we have a draft curtain and a
critical 4 ft aisle beneath the curtain (8.4.6.4). That shouldn't be
a problem since there is zero fuel above the drop ceiling. Needless
to say, having a nice chat with the AHJ BEFOREHAND is a must.

like to see what you all think.
If you have an ordinary metal building warehouse with normal Ord
Hazard
Group II storage with an office area you often end up with space
above the
offices. In this case the offices will have lay in tile ceilings with
insulation on top of the ceiling and no structure above the ceiling.
Therefore there will never be storage on top of the offices. There is
Approximately 14' of clear space above the offices of non combustible
construction with no separation between the space above the offices
and the
warehouse.
The offices represent approx. 30% of the total area of the building.
Sprinklers will be installed under the ceiling of the offices.
Do you protect above the offices completely?
Do you protect 15' of the space from the warehouse side?
Do you ignore it?
Thanks,
Greg
