There is nothing in 13 that clarifies the intent of the 10 ft separation. Also by a literal application, you can take a larger acceptable ceiling pocket, put a divider in it and it is then unacceptable (due to the separation criteria). Now that makes no sense and although logic does not always rule, it mostly does.

The reason for the 10 ft separation is that we don't want the ceiling jet to have to go through TWO ceiling pockets in order to reach the second ring of sprinklers. I did an article on just this topic in the NFPA Journal in the March 04 issue. You can access it from our web page at:

Needless to say, when something is not explicit identified in 13, you need to discuss it beforehand with the AHJ.

Ed, A new guy here put a sprinkler in each skylight and I challenged him on why. He pointed to 8.6.7 and asked if they could be omitted where it
said that. Damned if I could find anything in 13.

Ron, if my memory hasn't completely gone, I remember a discussion that
essentially said you could have multiple skylights with less than 10'
separation and treat them as a single skylight providing the aggregate
volume was less than 1000 cf. Does this ring a bell with anybody else?

Five 2 ft. x 2 ft. X 2 ft. Skylights located in a row each with 2 ft.
separation from the next. Does 8.6.7.1 require each skylight have to
have a head because they are not separated by at least 10 ft?
