Thanks, I'll look at these sections. The situation is an IBC building code Building Separation Wall dividing a public structure from another public structure so that they function code-wise as two separate buildings. A gut instinct says a sprinkler system should not cross this type of separation and so I am looking for some backup, but now I am beginning to taste crow.

There was an old formal interpretation that said one building, one system. There is criteria in the 2007 edition under 8.2.4 and 8.2.5 (and Annex). We could discuss what 8.2.4 means by multiple buildings with a common wall when they are owned by different parties but that's a different question.

Allan,

I believe this is a mass imaginary rule. It has come up here many
times and although it may not be advisable or a "best practice" I've
never found a prohibition and have on many occasions seen it in
application. Logically the only reasons I can see for limiting a
system to a single building would be to avoid confusion in an
emergency (but then I'd think we'd have more stringent rules defining
the location of the riser itself, etc.) and as to ownership when when
the buildings were legally controlled by different entities. Going
back to is it a good idea or not I'd tend to avoid it whenever
possible. Have I missed something in (for me) IBC? Have you missed
something in the codes applicable to St. Louis? By the way I was in
St. Louis in September out by Westport. I didn't have a chance to see
much but the area of the hotel, Busch Gardens and the Dent/Grant House
but it seemed a pleasant city.

Folks, it has been my understanding that a sprinkler system cannot be
used to serve sprinklers in another building. I cannot find the
chapter and verse. This is not a matter of convincing someone it is a
bad idea. Am I imagining this rule?
