Craig,

Your instinct is correct. There is information later on in the standard at A.11.2.3.1.8(4)(b) which clearly indicates that composite wood joists are not to be considered as "solid wood joists". Seems to me that 8.14.1.2.6 is the applicable section. Don't forget the possible increased remote area size per 11.2.3.1.8(3). Sounds like you're on the right track.

I am looking at plans for a building that has 20" TJI Composite Wood Joist
Construction between the floors. The building is to be equipped with an NFPA 13
system to the 2002 edition.

The sprinkler company is attempting to use Section 8.14.1.2.5 to avoid
sprinkling the combustible concealed spaces.

My reaction is that this exception would not apply to this situation, and that
8.14.1.2.6 would apply if this is the direction they want to go.

I am looking for a bit of input so I am sure I am on the right track.
