8.14.1.2.5 does not apply to composite wood joist, you must use 8.14.1.2.6.
If you'll look at the definitions in the 2007 handbook there is a difference
between Wood Joist Construction, which deals with solid wood joists, and
Composite wood joist construction which deals with TJI's. I believe that the
committee ment for 8.14.1.2.5 to apply only to "Wood Joist Construction" or
Solid wood joists, and 8.14.1.2.6 to apply to Composite wood joist
construction or TJI's.
"Concealed spaces formed by ceilings attached to composite wood joist
construction either directly or ----" This is pretty clear that this is what
you should use for composite joist. Just because it's after 8.14.1.2.5
doesn't mean that 5 has priority over 6. Just that they apply differently to
differing situations that are "Concealed spaces not requiring sprinkler
protection"

Subject: TJI Concealed spaces
I am looking at plans for a building that has 20" TJI Composite Wood Joist
Construction between the floors. The building is to be equipped with an NFPA
13 system to the 2002 edition.
The sprinkler company is attempting to use Section 8.14.1.2.5 to avoid
sprinkling the combustible concealed spaces.
My reaction is that this exception would not apply to this situation, and
that 8.14.1.2.6 would apply if this is the direction they want to go.
I am looking for a bit of input so I am sure I am on the right track.
