Is it continuous? Does it affect the development of the spray pattern? Is there storage or product beneath it? Is it solid or egg crate? It's 5' below the head, how high is it above the floor?
It's tough on a forum without a lot of specific's to give very accurate answers. Or Opinions. Thom McMahon, SET Firetech, Inc. 2560 Copper Ridge Dr P.O. If the valence against the wall was 5 feet below the sprinkler deflector, instead of 20", would that be treated differently? This situation can arise in a retail store having a 26" wide shelf against a wall. Would that be "obstruction against a wall" or obstruction more than 18" below sprinkler deflector? (762 mm) in width shall be permitted to be protected in accordance with Figure 8.6.5.1.2(b)." If you can not make it work with this then it should be sprinklered below. The fact that it is an L shape rather than a solid cube has no bearing on whether the area below is protected. If this valance is not continuously connected to the wall then it should be able to be treated as any other obstruction less than 4' wide. IE: no sprinklers unless over 4ft wide. If a wall had a valence or shelf 20" below a sprinkler head, is it a potential obstruction, as per 13? At the lease line there is an "L" shaped valence that drops 20 inches (vertical, at the lease line)from the ceiling and runs 26 inches (horizontal) towards the corridor. Typically there is no wall between the CRU's and the mall. Is this valence an obstruction to the sprinklers at the high ceiling level? My first solution was to space the sprinklers on both sides of the valence (CRU side and mall side), so that they cover up to the centre-line of the 26 inch wide valence. However, the sprinklers on the CRU side will change for tenant renovations, and the mall owner will not be able to enforce the tenant to provide coverage beyond the lease line. Hence, the sprinkler in the corridor side has to cover up to the lease line. Are the sprinklers in the corridor unobstructed due to the valence being more than 18 inches below the sprinkler deflector, or is the valence an obstruction, and possibly requiring sprinklers below the valence?
