Once again I'm sure I'm missing something and I certainly am not recommending this practice since I have no basis on which to do so, but...if steel has the same thermal co-efficient as concrete there should be no issue with expansion/contraction, and since we're always trying to tighten the pipe to the building so they both move together the only problem I can see is at seismic joints not properly addressed. Somebody show me my ignorance.
