What type of vibration readings do you take and how do you do it? I have never done vibration readings. Is there a standard that could be referenced?

Each pump is valved individually to the test header then a low water pressure signal is created by opening the discharge valves on the test header. The suction and discharge pressures are recorded. The motor and pump bearing temperatures are checked near the end of the run. Due to the pipe/valve configuration the labour for this work takes two people 3 to 4 hours each. For the annual tests we utilize 6 hosemonsters to measure the flows progressing from no-flow to all 6 monsters. (a LOT of water) We also take vibration readings while running. The results recorded and used for trending. What about annually? Still on a 14 y.o. standard? Tom Duross The National Fire Code of Canada (1995) 6.6.3.3 allows for a monthly run test for electrically driven pumps. In the appendix it also states: "Centrifugal fire pumps should not be operated for prolonged periods under shut-off conditions, that is, with no water flowing from the system" "because of the excessive wear on impellors due to the caviation, and on seals and thrust bearings due to the higher operating pressure and increased vibrations. Water should be discharged from the system if possible." Here we run our monthly tests (200hp Aurora 2000 usgpm) through the test header to confirm proper flow and operation of the pump controllers.
