This is a bad idea, pressure relief in lieu of expansion tank? We have a
community north of us that have weekend getaway homes that are all
sprinklered including the garages and outside canopies where any fuel fired
devices are. A lot of these homes are done with antifreeze this in December
this area had 2 weeks of single digits to -10, some of the antifreeze
systems froze. One contractor installed expansion tanks with pressure
relief - they froze. The relief valve did what is was supposed to, however
it introduced water into the systems and diluted the mixture. The low end
of these homes are $1,000,000 the high end is $10,000,000+, problems like
these just add fuel to the fire for our home builder opponents.

Subject: RE: Antifreeze Backflow Prevention

2010 NFPA 13 allows the use of a "Pressure Relief valve in lieu of an
expansion tank. (I guess the committee got tired of waiting for the price of
those expensive expansion tanks to come down, and came up with an
alternative.) But if you read 7.6.3.5 carefully all three conditions must be
met. Pump, relief and make up.
