NFPA 24, 2007 ed - 10.8.1.2 states that thrust blocks are not required with
mechanical type joints, grooved being specifically included. However there may
be an issue with galv steel in some jurisdictions.

Subject: Grooved Underground, Thrust Blocks Required?

A quick question about galvanized steel underground...

Galvanized 3", about 80 ft, grooved fittings...
Would this require thrust blocks?
