Let me clarify my original reply: I need to use grooved fittings UG several
years ago and had to make sure they were listed for use by definition or by
meeting the standards listed in 13. I call all of the major manufacturers and
was told at the time that NO they could not be used - period.

Evidently that has changed and great to know.

"Isn't pipe and fittings traditionally used in sprinkler work exempt
from requiring a listing per 13?"

As long as it meets one of the standards listed in NFPA 13.

Personnaly, I would not think that a listing is required for a coupling
or fitting to be used in the underground. It is listed for fire
protection use. We use them all the time with a galvanized coating, tar
and wrap and never had a issue.

Couple of thoughts:

24 is mostly augmentation to the typical underground installation
standards applicable when the UG is private fire service main. 24 does
not apply to public installation but can.

We get hung up on listings because we use them all the time. Other
trades don't. Isn't pipe and fittings traditionally used in sprinkler
work exempt from requiring a listing per 13?

Galvanized pipe can be directly buried. Ductile can be directly buried.
Grooved couplings and fittings are ductile. Gas pipe has to be black
steel which cannot be directly buried so buried gas line has to be
coated to X mils (I forget exactly) and the joints and fittings also.
Presumably black ductile threaded fittings on gas line would not need
coating.
