The 3 majors have a way of doing it. Autosprink does. If you tell the program what is dry and what is wet, it will also show up in the hydraulic report with the total volume of dry system piping. HydraCAD has a routine for system volume. As Benjamin said, SprinkCAD does as well. It is odd that anyone would size the compressor based off of hydraulic demand and not system capacity.

Some design programs will give you the total system volume as a separate
figure independent of the hydraulic calcs as well. I know SprinkCAD does,
but I'm not sure about the others.

B, "The air supply shall have a capacity capable of restoring normal air
pressure in the system within 30 minutes", I'd imagine you already know,
but the volume shown in the calcs isn't the amount of water (or air) in the
pipe, it's the amount flowed through the system in one minute with the
remote area flowing at the calculated density.

Subject: Today's Challenge question - Sizing Air compressors

Ok, so for today here it is:

When sizing a system air compressor for a dry or preaction system you size
it based on:

(a) the volume that is shown on the hydraulic calculation provides,

(b) a takeoff of the piping and determine volume of the entire system from
the end head back to the system valve.
