The head prior to the SS was called a sprinkler head. It distributed water
both up and down and there was no distinction in orientation. One head for
upright and pendent. When the SS came out the former head was designated as
"conventional" and the new as "standard spray." Slang created "old style,"
but as the SS became the norm, and therefore the "conventional" head the
slang term became officially synonymous with the old "conventional"
designation, and "old style" is now used right in NFPA with a definition.
