One of the major hotel chains has started separating the Porte Cochere from the main building deliberately to avoid putting in a dry system. In some cases the Porte Cochere overlaps the entrance but is not connected to the building.

However, the local building code requires the sprinklering of "porches and balconies" notwithstanding the 13R permission for deletion. So say it is a 13 building. This building has a portico or porte cochere near the main entrance of the building, which is not attached to the building. I don't know the exact clearance between the two structures, but for argument sake, say they are 3 feet apart. The contractor claims the portico is not attached to the building, so doesn't need to be sprinklered. Any views from the forum?
