Brian,

Reading through 8.8.5.1.2 I'd have to agree with you that a head would be
required under it.
My question would be, can you move the head to protect beneath that reveal
and use 8.8.7.2 to leave the other area as an unprotected pocket?
Not sure of the size of the space you are working with and where these
heads would fall within it, but may be something to look at.
