I think all you have to do is comply with Table 8.8.5.1.2.  

 

8.8.5.1.2 (3) gives you an option 'shall be permitted' that is less
restrictive than the first table but can only be used when the soffit is 30"
wide or less.

Subject: Soffit Along a Wall

 

Using extended coverage pendent heads & have a soffit/reveal that is 60"
wide and runs the length of the wall and sticks down 3" from the ACT. The
heads are far enough away from the edge of the soffit/reveal to through
under it and reach the wall no problem. But if I'm reading things right
since this soffit/reveal is along a wall I have to apply either 8.8.5.1.2
(b/c) NNFPA-13 2013) which would require heads under it as well correct?
Just seems like an overkill to me.
