So, here’s a related question I’ve been pondering: What if you have Wood Joist 
Construction (technically combustible obstructed, right?) but the depth of the 
wood members is relatively short (like 2x6s or something)… are you prohibited 
from using ESFR heads?

It seems strange that you wouldn’t be able to use them in that case, since you 
would be able to maintain the appropriate deflector distance (up to 18” from 
deck is allowable for some ESFRs) and there would be no actual obstruction to 
the sprinklers. Is there something that I am missing?

Yes.  There are things you can do to change the building to make it ESFR 
compatible.  But as it was described, you have a building that is not compliant 
with ESFR.

Too many people jump to ESFR as the panacea of storage.
