Same here. I have a headless ubuntu server, starting like 2009 and since then upgrading from LTS to LTS, now its 20.04.
Similar, i run squeezeboxserver on it, also since like 2009, which now was upgraded from 7.9.1 to the nightly build v8.0.1, 1608617100 in 64bit, installed with dpkg -i and the all-debian file. Giving that "dpkg"-command in a SSH-shell was the only thing I had to do after upgrading ubuntu itself with the usual do-release-upgrade. I even had that guide with the init.d-script already ready in my browser but didn't need it after all. So far, it works perfekt and feels almost like the 7.9.1 I ran before. Since I use radios, the server showed me that mini how-to regarding installing the "version fix patch" on them, which also worked withouth issues. Thx for your work!
