Just to reiterate, you don't need your -SlimServer- PC to be on in
order to use SoftSqueeze.  In this case, it'll act like a Squeezebox
without SlimServer, i.e. you'll have to connect it to SqueezeNetwork.

You do need a PC to run SoftSqueeze obviously, since it's a Java
program, but it doesn't have to be your SlimServer PC.

It's exactly like a Squeezebox.  The interface currently looks like a
Squeezebox2 but I believe there's a Transporter skin in 6.5 and there
may be a Squeezebox3 skin coming.

Sure, good point.  Just keep in mind that what you see on
SqueezeNetwork is only a small percentage of what's available.

You may want to try 'URL Snooper'
(http://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/urlsnooper/index.html) to
decipher some of the more obscured URLs.
