The BBC App URLS need to be updated (I'll open a bug for it). I think what has happened is the BBC App URLs are a mixture of old UK URLs and old international (i.e. non UK) URLs (such as 5live's live_int and 6Music ram ). I thought they got tidied up in a 7.4 but the update might have got lost when changes were migrated back into trunk.
As I am outside the UK - I don't get the variations of service that you are getting. I think whoever tests these URLs in the US also gets the same non-UK service and hence didn't see the problem with UK based listeners. Vinnie's BBC URLs are the URLs that should be used as they are the new single URLs BBC created in the summer (i.e. work for both UK and non-UK). Regarding speed of connection of R3. The URLs are playlist with many separate URLs. The idea is that if 1st URL doesn't connect - player will go onto 2nd URL, then 3rd etc. until it finds an URL that plays. Perhaps the BBC have put some slow URLs at the bottom of the UK r3.asx list so that the user will get a connection eventually. In the non UK r3.asx the first 8 URLs are below - note there are 4 groups with URLs being repeated in each group.
