SSH can be viewed a command line application, however this is mainly due to
the fact that the majority of SSH clients use a telnet style interface to
use the SSH connection.

From the flip-side - SSH is not a command line application, it is a secure
channel mechanism that supports or encapsulates a number of other security
and transmission protocols.

Using X11 forwarding on both sides of the connection it is possible to set
up a link between a 'client' and a 'server' so that X applications executed
on the 'server' will receive input from and display output to the 'client'.
I'm using the terms client and server loosely as depending on where you are
the client is the server or the server is the client.

Why would anyone want to use X-Windows rather than the nifty command line
interface?

Not everyone is familiar with, wants to or needs to use a command line
interface.
A systems administrator may want to set up a novice user with secure
access to a sub-set of applications using a convenient and friendly
interface where you do not have to remember items like which '/' to use or
that case is significant as they are a click not a keystroke away.

Subject: RE: Enable SSH in various XWindow Managers

Hi Auteria,

I'm not sure what you really need since SSH is a command line
application. I just start it up in an xterm. I suppose one could execute
an xterm that in turn runs SSH, but for that read the xterm man page.
I do have a few scripts that will run ssh set to specific machines so I
don't have to type the names in all the time. What is it you want to do
using an X manager that can't be done on the command line?
