Dave, Broadening the scope of the list to include subjects ancillary to small scale live steam? Yes, but the subjects must support small scale live steam. Railroad history, track laying, rolling stock, etc. all contribute to the enjoyment of miniature steam locomotive operation. These topics can and do consume as much attention and time as the locomotives themselves.
Heck, I'd even allow HO scale, O scale, and Gauge 3 live steam in addition to 32 mm and 45 mm gauge locos (with their spectrum of different scales like 15mm, 16mm, 7/8", 10mm, 1/32). Discussions about GWR broad gauge in 10 mm scale might engender some very interesting discussions. I would almost go off the deep end and allow internal combustion small scale locos (like diesel-electric or diesel-hydraulic), but then I can be radical sometimes.
