Sorry, I've been in Hawaii, then getting Glen through the hospital/surgery thing, so I wasn't around to put in my two cents earlier. David, this list is just right as it is. We are blessed that you are so generous to provide this format for those of us who love live steam railroading of all sorts. And, frankly, the list would lose a lot if things got too busy! This is a great way for us to stay in touch and connected in this hobby when one considers the fact that we hail globally. I could have even checked in while I was in Hawaii, except that I was too busy to get online. I did visit a couple of steam railroads (Oahu Historical RR Society and the in-progress restorations at Gaylord's on Kauai!) between the earthquake and completing my SCUBA training! While I know that Bert started out his message here attempting to hew to the list's guidelines (see http://www.45mm.com/sslivesteam_guide.html), the words raise an interesting dilemma. In recent months the traffic on this list has dwindled. My obligations to my business and non-steam-train life are such that I just don't have the time to "prime the pump" as they say, to make the list more active. We had gone eight days since the last series of postings; three days before that, in the 10 previous days, there was only one posting and on and on. I am wondering -- and ask any and all to respond to the question here -- whether I should broaden the scope of the mailing list. Rather than the phrase "It is not about ride-on engines and it's not about electric railroad garden railroads ..." maybe it should say something like, "Ancillary topics might include steam railroad history, issues about rolling stock, tracking laying (ballast, frost-heave), switch-building, model-building ..." You get the idea. In other words, what I'm asking is this: Should we broaden the scope of the list so that it might become more active? Should we keep the scope the way it is and determine other ways of making it more active? Or, should we keep the scope the way it is and not worry about it not being too active? Of course, I reserve the right to make the final decision (this is, after all, a benevolent dictatorship), but I thought list members should get an opportunity to express their opinions.
