Hey John and Lord Geoff, We were there late on Sunday. It was Glen's first "outing" since shoulder reconstruction surgery last week. Had a nice chat with fellow Master Gardener and RR buff, Hayden Lee, at the G layout. Loved the "junkyard." The earthquake scene was pretty fantastic and well done. John Powell's work was very good, but Clark Lord's bridge is still superior. As for small scale live steam at this type of train show, you may want to know that it doesn't work out well. I understand that at some of the big shows (Queen Mary comes to mind), there is a secure set-up for live steam. But at smaller venues, Paso Robles is an example similar to Medford, it becomes a scary ordeal. Little kids (and many of their parents) tend to ignore warnings that the steam is real, not to touch the locos because they don't just "look" hot and not to stop in front of steamers carrying hot, spitting locomotives. And a lot of the electric folks object to being anywhere near the greasy, wet rails that many of our live steam machines leave in their wake. It is also very difficult to hear what's going on with your loco due to the excessive crowd noise and bells, whistles and clanging created by some of the electrics. And the smell from one coal burner being run indoors could almost cause a lawsuit from someone unawares. Been there, done that. Not fun. Please do let me know if either of you figure out who was the North Coast live steamer who ran on coal at Medford's RR Park. I know that his lordship has a coal burner, so, of course, Ld. Geoff was my first thought.

I understand Saturday's paid attendance broke all previous records. We also had some new displays this year, including a fantastic diorama featuring an LGB yellow Mogul on a trestle damaged by an imaginary 8.2 earthquake. The HO club from Klamath Falls also brought their modular layout over for display. Maybe next year, we will have some live steam engines actually running, if only on static blocks or rollers.
